Fortification is one of the globally recognized, safe and cost-effective approaches to address vitamin, mineral and nutrient deficiencies amongst populations. The process of fortification involves deliberate addition of nutrients to commonly consumed foods to enhance the nutritional value of foods without altering its taste, appearance, or quality. Rice fortification is one such process where micronutrients are added to make fortified rice kernels (FRKs), which are then mixed in a defined proportion to conventional or normal rice for consumption.

Through this Poshan Weekly issue, we bring to you, key resources from the government, as well as from WFP’s experience and activities in India like guidance around holding capacity building and trainings on the topic, among others. We hope that these resources serve as learning guides around understanding rice fortification in India better and open our ways of thinking more innovatively towards improving the nutritional status of the Indian population.
